sedentary work environment

Many people feel that in order to get some serious benefit from exercising, they need to go all out every day with strenuous exercising. Nothing could be further from the truth. This article is dedicated to those men and women who have a hard time with exercising. It is true that there are people that do not like to exercise or even sweat. If you are reading this and you are one of those people, there is one common fact that you need to accept about the body that you now inhabit. It was designed to be moved daily.

Learning From the Past: We Used to Be More Active

Our ancestors living during the Paleolithic and Mesolithic eras as far back as 2.6 million years ago did not have to set time out of their day to “exercise”. To them what we call exercise was actually simply their day to day living. As hunter gatherers during this time, human beings were physically active on a daily basis with the daily requirements of getting food and water. The activities of tracking down prey, gathering vegetables and fruit from the surrounding area and even gathering water ensured that human beings were constantly physically active. The human body evolved to move on a daily basis.

Imagine a band of humans tracking a Woolly Mammoth 10,000 years ago. They would have to stalk it for miles until eventually figuring out a way to take it down. Afterwards, they would need to dress the giant animal and carry most of the carcass back to their dwellings. They had none of the technological conveniences we have today. This is life imposed physical fitness!

Modern Living: A Little Too Much Convenience

Today our reality is completely different from our ancestors. We our now blessed with an incredibly advanced society full of technological wonders that make our lives easier. These days you can get your produced delivered to your home if you want to. Some people live their lives never leaving their homes, and sometimes never even leaving their couch except to go to the refrigerator.

Our blessings from our technologically advanced systems suddenly become a curse in terms of the growing health hazards of obesity, morbid obesity, and heart disease, especially in the westernized nations. Most people in the western world live a sedentary lifestyle where they spend most of their day being completely physically inactive. They start their day sitting in their car as they commute to work sometimes for a whole hour. They then have to spend most of an 8 hour day sitting at a desk. As soon as 5 pm hits they commute back home for another hour of sitting just to get home in time for dinner. Many people who have these lifestyles cannot help but become over weight, sometimes even obese.
